In last week’s article provided an overview of the major factors in “How to play golf well”. This week we will delve deeper into the details of the players “blue-print” of “How to become an elite level golfer”
There are many future opportunities and career options for those who become an “Elite level golfer”
First of all, you can turn pro and win the Open or the Masters! China has had plenty of success with "homegrown" players, such as Li Haotong and Shi Yuting, who have risen to become the world's leading tour players.
The second direction - to join the golf school team by virtue of golf skills to become a top school. MIGA students such as Wang Zhe, Shen Yufeng, Ye Lei, Pan Ziyi and Wu Jinyu are all successful cases.
In the third direction, You can become a PGA professional coach like me.
MY STORY
Having grown up in Scotland I was a decent amateur at aged 20 had a handicap of 2, average score of around 74. I took a job in London as a trainee golf professional where I could have the correct environment and team to help develop my game whilst also developing my career as a golf coach. My plan A was to become a tour professional, my plan B was to be a golf coach.
One of the members at the golf club was Paul Casey. I was fortunate to play, practice and spend time around Paul. After meeting Paul I realized that I was so far away from my goal of becoming a tour professional. Paul was the English Amateur Champion and playing collegiate golf at ASU. He was the leading collegiate player in America at that time.
Paul’s distance was 50 yards further than me and his technique was much more advanced than mine. I then started to work on my fitness to get stronger to get more distance. I worked on my technique to get the ball closer to the hole. Although I had progress and played well in local professional tournaments - unfortunately it was a race against time. I couldn’t make the improvements fast enough to get to where I wanted to be. I started the correct approach too late in life. I then decided that I would focus on coaching and become the best coach I could be. Then I came to China in 2004.
Drawing on my own experiences in pursuing this goal and also my 20 + years of coaching golf I am excited to share in depth details and delve deeper into the “blue-print” on how to become an elite level golfer.
IS THIS "JOURNEY" REALLY FOR ME?
As you will have realised by now, to pursue the goal of becoming an elite level golfer will take a tremendous amount of time, physical and financial investment, hard work, commitment, sacrifices, sweat, tears, heartaches but also joys and happy moments!
If you choose to pursue your dream of playing college golf, then not only do you need to have good grades on the golf course – you will need good grades at school.
Before you start on this journey, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

Q2
Am I willing to make many sacrifices to pursue this goal?
Q3
Does my time and energy investment meet my ambitions?
If you can answer YES to the 3 above questions, then you should persue this goal!
However, if you cant answer YES to these 3 questions then you should view golf as a hobby.

ABOUT YOUR ENVIRONMENT

One of the things I learned from moving to London was the importance of environment. In London I found a great environment with many golfers who were better than me, that made me motivated to get better. We were able to train together, play together and that competitive environment was great.
Many junior golfers have moved overseas for these reasons.
From my students experiences though this is not always the best plan. Culturally there are many differences than here in China and that brings challenges to the developing junior golfer.
To survive overseas the child will need to be fully self-sufficient and independent. In China there is more support towards the student from parents, coaches, teachers and customer service staff. Overseas it’s the cultural norm that students take full responsibility for themselves and are fully self-disciplined. For children who have been so well looked after and supported to then be put into that new and unfamiliar environment is very difficult to adjust. It may take years for the child to adapt and that would hinder their development.
Just this developed their game year, there has been two “home-grown” players who have from within China such as MIGA star students Wang Zhe and Pan Zi Yi who will play college golf this year. They have shown that its completely possible to achieve this goal from within China.
ABOUT YOUR TRAINING PROGRAM
The modern and systematic approach to junior golf development lies in 3 main areas:
What makes golf so difficult is that it is a game of many influencing factors. It is a “holistic” game consisting of the major following influences:
PHYSICAL
Last year we were reminded of the importance of distance by the Bryson De Chambeau effect. Thru a combination of physical and advanced technical training Bryson was able to increase his driving distance to drive the ball over 350 yards! That led to him being able to win the US Open.
The further you can hit the ball gives the golfer a massive advantage as they are closer to the green and using a shorter distance club to approach the green. This makes it much easier to get closer to the hole and therefore they can make more birdies and achieve lower scores.
For the developing golfer developing their physical element takes time. MIGA student Eddie Zhang has developed his fitness at MIGA since 2016 and is now able to hit the driver over 300 yards. There is a systematic process that the junior golfer must follow such as developing fundamental movement skills first, physical literacy, then Strength and Speed training.
技术
TECHNICAL
We all know the importance of technique and the aspiring elite golfer needs to learn many different shots and this takes time. As the junior golfer is growing and physically changing, naturally their swing will be affected, and this will bring challenges and difficulties towards short term performance. They need to have regular time each week with their coaches in order to not only learn new skills but to maintain the ones they have previously learned.
Learning these techniques requires time, focus, patience, discipline and hard work. Of course learning new skills won't be comfortable and will be unfamiliar. The junior golfer needs to be coachable and open to learning.
MENTAL
We all know that the importance of the mental game in any elite sport.
Lee Westwood,
Recently there was an interview with Lee Westwood who shared his perspective. Lee said that he focuses on the process, not the outcome. This is great advice for the developing junior golfer as its so easy to focus on the outcome (score) and then loose focus on the process which is what makes the score.
Playing regular tournaments will force you to learn as you put yourself into stresfull situations you will then be able to recognise the emotions that you face and then be able to apply your coach’s advice.
We must recognise the importance of learning and accumulating experiences rather than just being disappointed with the score or a poor shot. The golfer is developing, and they need to keep that growth mindset.
练习
PRACTICE
We all know that Golf demands a huge amount of our time especially if we have high goals and expectations. There are so many parts of the game which need to be practiced regularly.
Malcolm Gladwell
You will have heard of the 10,000 hours concept which was outlined by Malcolm Gladwell and states that to become an expert in any field, you will need to carry out 10,000 hours of “correct” training in order to achieve a high level of performance. Hours spent on the “incorrect way” don’t count!
From my personal experience of developing my golf, finding a competitive environment is very important. Being around other golfers who are of similar age, similar if not better level and training and competing together is not only enjoyable but highly beneficial in advancing your skills.
ABOUT YOUR TEAM
You will need to have a team of experts who support you and provide you with the correct advice on how to develop your game, your academics and shape your character in preparation for college life.
With the modern golfer, they are undertaking a holistic training regimen. They are working with not just one coach – a team of coaches such as Fitness, Mental, Tactical and Practice. They are not just working on their swing technique – they are working on each of the six areas mentioned above as they know that each area is of equal importance to their success.
You will need to find a coach who is suitable for you, someone you like and respect. A coach who is responsible and caring, a coach who is open to working with others and a coach who helps you to get better. There is no coach that knows the answers to every question, most important is a coach who seeks the answers and cares about you.
You will need to have extremely supportive parents who are able to provide the wide range of resources and investment to allow you to pursue this goal. Parents are the most important part of your support system, not only do they need to be the parent, they also need to help you manage yourself and co-ordinate your activities and act as a sounding board each step of the way. Parents will need to be very patient and encouraging to deal with the ups and downs.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES THAT YOU WILL FACE ON THIS JOURNEY?
For junior golfers based in China the main challenge is how to balance school and golf. The demands of homework will restrict the amount of time that you can allocate to practice. Furthermore, the golf courses are mostly located far away from the city therefore takes children a long time to get to the golf course or practice range therefore practice time is reduced.
The players score and performance goes up and down and that is normal and for many different reasons. First of all the child is going thru massive physical and emotional changes as they go thru puberty and mature. The physical changes such as growth spurts will create imbalances and cause problems in the players technique. When the form is good its easy, its when the form isn’t good that we all need to have a calm and reassuring approach. Naturally children may start to doubt themselves, can I really achieve this goal? This is where parents and coaches need to have the correct perspective and be a positive assurance that the players form will return. It is during our toughest times that we learn the most.
Keeping a Long Term Perspective – As Parents are the key person in “managing the player” and co-ordinating between the team members, its essential that they adopt a long term perspective. The score that you have when you are 12 or 14 isnt the most important. What is most important is the score you have when you are 16/17 as that is when college coaches are recruiting players. What’s important for players who are developing on this journey is to look at every tournament or every experience as a chance to learn about themselves and the game of golf. A chance to see what their strengths and weaknesses are and keep learning, keep working hard towards the eventual goal. Players who succeed in golf and life adopt this “continually improvement” with a “growth mindset”.
SHOULD I GO TO PLAY COLLEGE GOLF OR GO STRAIGHT TO THE PRO TOUR?
Obviously, everyone’s most suitable road is going to be different.
Li Hao Tong and Shi Yu Ting are players who have developed their game over the years at MIGA and within China, then progressed to the worlds tours.
Then there are the many leading players such as Paul Casey who have first gone to play college golf and not only develop their game but get an education. Personally, I value education as I believe that having a good education is of great value to your general life and also of great benefit to your golf. With great education you will gain greater perspective and decision making which will help you to play better golf.
My former student Ye Lei is a great example of a player who has first class education and also first-class golf skills. Ye Lei is on the golf team at Stanford and is one of the top ranked players on the NCAA Division 1. I am confident that her future will be on the LPGA.
If your goal is to become a collegiate player then you would have more time and a great environment and team to develop your golf. You would also have a plan B to fall back on should you not reach your goal or after you retire from golf then you have other career options.
To be considered for a collegiate golf team - You will need an score average of 75 makes and 76 for females. Course distance of 7,046 yards for men and 6,172 yards for females.
To be ranked 100 th on the PGA / LPGA, you will need a score average of 71.5 for men and 72 for females. Course distance of 7259 Men and 6531 for females.
To be top 10 in the world - you will need a score average of 70 for the PGA tour and 69.9 for LPGA.
