注意：女士可以穿着高尔夫长裤，裙子或剪裁的短裤等，上衣可穿着T恤衫等，但不论是否有袖子，必须有衣领。

最早的高尔夫规则是于1744年制定的，当时是英国爱丁堡某一俱乐部的会员集中在一起讨论这项运动的规章制度，一直到二十世纪前，人们球时的着装都与日常服装无异，到二战前，这项运动开始普及，同时，女子也越来越多的参加这项运动，而女子在球场上的着装和男子一样，都是穿夹克，打领带。
The earliest golf rules were enacted in 1744, when members of a club in Edinburgh, England, gathered together to discuss the rules and regulations of the sport. Until the twentieth century, people's dresses were the same as everyday clothes. Before the Second World War, the sport began to spread. At the same time, women were increasingly participating in the sport, and women dressed in jackets and ties were the same as the men.

但Polo衫最初是来自网球运动，是由曾获得大满贯7次单打冠军及3次双打冠军的Rene Lacoste，于其自创品牌 Lacoste 所推出有领运动衫。在此之前是以长袖衬衫，西装领带作为高尔夫运动装。
The Polo shirt was originally from tennis. Rene Lacoste, who won seven Grand Slam singles titles and three doubles titles, launched a collared sweatshirt at his own brand Lacoste. Prior to this, long-sleeved shirts, suits and ties were used as golf sportswear.

由于不便于运动，还必须卷起袖子之外，透气性也不够，所以在 1920 年代时，由Polo Ralph Lauren推出的款式大受欢迎成为定番，并借此将此衣型引介到马球界和其他运动界以至休闲穿着，才因此叫做Polo衫，也称为高尔夫球衫（golf shirt）。
