DURHAM – Freshman William Love helped the Duke men's golf team to a second-place finish and fellow classmate Ethan Evans made a strong individual debut as the 12th annual Rod Myers Invitational concluded Saturday at the Duke University Golf Club. The Blue Devils shot a 1-under 287 in the final round and were one of just three teams under par for the tournament, finishing 3-under 862.
HOW IT HAPPENED
William Love
William Love made the turn at one-over after a birdie on the ninth hole and proceeded to fire a sizzling 32 on the final nine holes of competition, thanks to a chip-in birdie on the par-4 13th and an eagle on the par-5 14th by draining a 30-foot bomb.
Love's par on the final hole of the tournament secured the solo second-place finish for Duke, which finished one stroke clear of third-place Charlotte.
Love, the Atlanta, Ga, native, freshman finished the tournament in a tie for sixth at 3-under 213.
Ian SiebersJunior Ian Siebers birded the fourth, seventh and ninth to turn in 2-under 34 on his way to a 1-under 71 on Saturday, good for an overall tie for 15th at even-par 216.
Ethan Evans
Ethan Evans paced the Duke individuals in the earlier tee times with a 2-under front nine route to a 1-under 71. Evans was the top individual for the tournament as the Mercer Island, Wash., product was 3-under 213 and tied for sixth.
Jimmy ZhengJunior Jimmy Zheng played to par through the first 13 holes on Saturday before making back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15. He posted a final-round 71 to finished in a tie for 17th at 1-over 217.
Luke SampleAlso for Duke, sophomores Luke Sample (+6) and Kelly Chinn (+10), finished tied for 35th and tied for 47th, respectively.
Team RankingAlabama won the team title at 13-under par, while the Crimson Tide's Canon Claycomb (-11) was the individual medalist. Duke (-2), Charlotte (-1), North Florida (+2) and UNC Greensboro (+9) rounded out the top five of the 14 -team field.
Highlights
Love was 9-under combined on the Duke Golf Club's par-5 holes, which marked a tournament low.
As a team, Duke finished 27-under on the par-5's, also a tournament low.
Duke was one of only three teams (Alabama, Charlotte) to finish under par for the tournament.
Charlie Crockett (Missouri) and Canon Claycomb (Alabama) both shot a 65 (-7) on Saturday, which were tied for the third- lowest rounds in the tournament's history. Claycomb's 65 included a 6-under 30 on Saturday's back nine.

We played some tough holes on the last six, especially the last four, and I thought the guys fought hard and hung in there when sometimes those last few holes, especially when the rain is coming down, can be challenging. It was a good learning experience. Hats off to Alabama, they had a great week, and we were excited to have them in our field this year and hopefully we'll see them down the road. Excited to see our guys battle and finish as high as they could."
Love on his final round"I was struggling early but was able to hit some quality shots and make some really good putts to get myself back in it. Chipping in for birdie on 13 and making a 30-footer for eagle on 14 really got me going. Finishing in front of the team and to play the way I did made me really proud to be a part of such an incredible program."
